Picture this: you're 30 miles offshore in the Florida Keys, the sun has just dipped below the horizon, and you're rigging up for one of the most challenging big-game fish in these waters. Our overnight swordfish charter aboard the 55-foot Hatteras "Poppa Wahoo" puts you right in the heart of where these apex predators hunt. Captain David Epstein has been chasing broadbill swordfish in these waters for years, and he knows exactly where to position the boat when darkness falls. This isn't your typical half-day fishing trip – we're talking about a full night on the water, targeting fish that can weigh 200 pounds or more. The boat sleeps six comfortably, and we provide all the heavy tackle, circle hooks, and live bait you'll need. Fair warning though: swordfish don't make it easy, but that's exactly why landing one is such a rush.
We'll head out from Islamorada in the late afternoon, giving us time to reach the prime swordfish grounds before sunset. The ride out takes about an hour and a half, depending on conditions and where the fish have been showing up. Once we're in position over the drop-off where the continental shelf plunges to over 1,000 feet, we start setting up the spread. This involves deploying electric reels loaded with 80-pound test line and rigging squid or live bait on 10/0 circle hooks. The key is getting your bait down to the 300-600 foot range where swordfish cruise at night. Between bites, you'll have time to enjoy the peace of being offshore under a canopy of stars – it's surprisingly calm out there once the sun goes down. The boat has a comfortable cabin with bunks, a head, and air conditioning if you need to catch some rest between fish. Most guys find it hard to sleep though, especially when the lines start screaming.
Swordfishing is all about precision and patience. We use electric reels because hand-cranking from 400 feet gets old fast, especially when you're fighting a fish that doesn't want to come up. The technique involves slow-trolling or drift fishing with the baits suspended at different depths on the water column. We'll typically run four to six lines, each rigged with a combination of lights and chemical glow sticks to attract the swordfish. The lights mimic the bioluminescent prey that broadbills feed on after dark. When a fish takes the bait, you'll know it – these aren't subtle bites. The rod doubles over and the reel starts peeling line like there's no tomorrow. Captain David will coach you through the fight, which can last anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on the size of the fish. The boat is equipped with a fighting chair and a full array of gaffs and harpoons for the final capture. We also carry a tag-and-release kit for anyone who wants to contribute to swordfish research.
Broadbill swordfish are the main target on this trip, and for good reason. These are some of the most prized gamefish in the Atlantic, known for their incredible speed and acrobatic fights. A typical swordfish in these waters runs between 50 and 150 pounds, but we've seen fish over 300 pounds come up from the depths. They're most active at night, using their distinctive bill to stun squid and other prey in the water column. What makes swordfish so special is their unpredictability – they might charge the surface and start jumping, or they could sound deep and test your drag for an hour. The best months for swordfish in the Keys are typically October through March, when cooler water temperatures bring them closer to shore. Besides the swordfish, you'll often hook into other deep-water species like tilefish, queen snappers, and the occasional mahi-mahi that's attracted to our lights. Night fishing also brings out some interesting sharks, including sixgill and Cuban dogfish that rarely see daylight. Every drop is a mystery, which keeps even seasoned anglers on their toes throughout the night.
This overnight charter fills up fast, especially during peak swordfish season from November through February. The 55-foot Hatteras provides the stability and range you need for this type of fishing, and Captain David's local knowledge makes all the difference when it comes to finding fish. We include all tackle, bait, and fishing licenses, so you just need to bring food, drinks, and a sense of adventure. The boat has plenty of storage for coolers and personal gear, plus a full electronics package with GPS, fishfinder, and radar for safe navigation. Most groups bring enough food and beverages for dinner and breakfast, since we'll be out from late afternoon until the next morning. This trip works great for bachelor parties, father-son fishing adventures, or any group of serious anglers looking for their next big catch. Don't wait too long to book – swordfish season doesn't last forever, and the best nights on the water go to the anglers who plan ahead. Give us a call and let's get you set up for a night of fishing you'll be talking about for years.
