Luxury Deep Sea Fishing Aboard the Poppa Wahoo

Step aboard the Poppa Wahoo, a pristine 55' Hatteras sportfishing yacht, and get ready for some of the best deep sea fishing Islamorada has to offer. This isn't your typical charter boat experience – we're talking luxury accommodations, top-rated crew, and access to some of the most productive offshore waters in the Florida Keys. Captain Brad and his expert team know exactly where the fish are biting, and they'll put you on the action whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your feet wet in the deep sea fishing world. With space for up to six guests, this charter strikes the perfect balance between intimate fishing and having enough room to move around comfortably while you're battling that fish of a lifetime.

What to Expect on the Water

The moment you step onto the Poppa Wahoo, you'll notice this isn't just another fishing boat – it's a floating fishing paradise. The 55' Hatteras comes loaded with everything you need for a world-class fishing adventure, from state-of-the-art electronics that help us locate fish to premium tackle that can handle whatever the Gulf Stream throws at us. We'll cruise out to the renowned fishing grounds off Islamorada, where the continental shelf drops off and the big pelagic species roam. The ride out is smooth and comfortable, giving you time to soak in those stunning Florida Keys views while Captain Brad briefs you on the game plan for the day. Whether we're targeting the weed lines for mahi or heading to the blue water for tuna and wahoo, every trip is tailored to what's biting and what you want to catch. The boat's spacious cockpit gives everyone plenty of room to fish without getting in each other's way, and the shaded areas provide relief when that Florida sun gets intense.

Trolling Techniques & Tackle

Out here in the deep blue, trolling is the name of the game, and Captain Brad has perfected this art form over years of fishing these waters. We'll be running multiple lines at different depths and distances, using everything from ballyhoo rigs and feathers to high-speed lures that drive wahoo absolutely crazy. The Poppa Wahoo is rigged with outriggers and a full spread of rods, allowing us to cover maximum water and present baits at various levels in the water column. When we're targeting mahi, we'll focus on floating sargassum weed lines and debris fields where these fish love to hang out. For tuna and wahoo, it's all about finding the right temperature breaks and current edges where baitfish congregate. The crew handles all the technical stuff – setting up the spread, adjusting lure positions, and reading the fish finder – so you can focus on the fun part: reeling in fish. All tackle is provided, from the heavy conventional reels perfect for big tuna to the lighter spinning gear we might use if we find a school of smaller fish. The boat carries a variety of lures and baits to match whatever conditions we encounter, and Captain Brad is always adjusting the approach based on what's working that particular day.

Top Catches This Season

Mahi Mahi, also known as Common Dolphinfish, are absolutely the crowd favorites on our Islamorada charters, and for good reason. These fish are pure excitement from the moment they hit your line – they'll jump, tail-walk, and put on a show that'll have everyone on the boat cheering. Mahi typically run anywhere from 10 to 40 pounds in our waters, with the occasional bull dolphin pushing 50 pounds or more. The best action usually happens from late spring through early fall when the Gulf Stream is closest to shore and loaded with floating sargassum. What makes mahi so special is their willingness to bite almost anything we throw at them, making them perfect for families and first-time offshore anglers. Plus, they're absolutely delicious on the dinner table.

Wahoo are the speed demons of the deep sea, and catching one is guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping. These fish can hit 60 miles per hour, and when they strike a trolled lure, they'll scream line off your reel like nothing else in the ocean. Wahoo in our area typically range from 20 to 60 pounds, with their razor-sharp teeth and torpedo-shaped bodies built for pure speed. Fall and winter are prime time for wahoo fishing off Islamorada, when cooler water temperatures bring them closer to shore. The fight is intense but relatively short – wahoo tend to make one or two blistering runs before tiring out. Their flaky white meat is considered some of the best eating fish in the ocean.

Yellowfin Tuna represent the ultimate test of angler and tackle, combining incredible speed with remarkable endurance. These fish are built like underwater missiles, with powerful pectoral fins and a body designed for non-stop swimming. Yellowfin in our waters range from school fish in the 20-30 pound range to true giants exceeding 100 pounds. The bigger fish typically show up during winter months when water temperatures drop and baitfish schools are thick. What makes yellowfin so challenging is their ability to sound deep and stay there, testing both your stamina and your drag system. The reward is some of the finest sashimi-grade fish you'll ever taste.

Blackfin Tuna might be the smaller cousins of yellowfin, but they make up for size with pure attitude and incredible table fare. These fish typically run 10 to 30 pounds in our area and are available year-round, though they're most abundant during winter months. Blackfin are perfect for anglers who want the tuna experience without the marathon battle – they fight hard for their size but won't leave you completely exhausted. They're also fantastic eating

Atlantic Sailfish

Sailfish are the showboats of offshore fishing - that massive dorsal fin and acrobatic jumps make every fight memorable. They average 6-8 feet and 40-60 pounds, roaming the 80-300 foot range along current edges and temperature breaks. Winter is prime time here in the Keys when they stack up thick. Why chase them? Pure spectacle - multiple jumps, long runs, and that sail flashing in the sun. They're built for speed, hitting 30+ mph, and they'll test every bit of your skill. The bite can be tricky since they use that bill to stun bait first. Key tip: when kite fishing with live goggle-eyes or pilchards, resist the urge to set the hook immediately. Let them eat the bait properly, then come tight slowly. Patience pays off with these magnificent fish.

Blackfin Tuna

Blackfin are our local tuna - smaller than their yellowfin cousins at 10-25 pounds, but they make up for size with pure attitude. These dark-backed scrapper live near the continental shelf in 100-500 feet of water. Best fishing happens fall through spring when they're thick around the Keys. What makes them fun? They fight way above their weight class and school up tight, so multiple hookups are common. The meat is rich and perfect for the grill or seared rare. They've got sharp eyes, so you need to scale down your tackle - light fluorocarbon leaders and smaller hooks work best. My go-to technique is vertical jigging with small spoons or bucktails. When you find the school, work it fast because they'll move on quickly.

Blackfin Tuna

Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish

These golden beauties are some of the most colorful fish you'll encounter out here. Mahi typically run 15-30 pounds, though we've seen them hit 50+. They love floating debris and weed lines in 100-400 feet of water, especially during our peak season from spring through fall. What makes them special? That fight is something else - they'll jump, run, and put on a real show. Plus, they're absolutely delicious with that firm white meat. The colors are wild too - brilliant gold and green that shifts like a light show when they come to the boat. Pro tip: when you hook one, keep your eyes peeled for others. They school up, so where there's one, there's usually more. We'll often get doubles or triples if we work it right.

Mahi Mahi or Common Dolphinfish

Wahoo Fish

Wahoo are the speed demons of the deep - we're talking 60 mph bursts that'll test your drag and your nerves. These sleek predators typically run 20-60 pounds with that distinctive blue and silver striping. They cruise the open water beyond the reef, usually in 150-600 feet, and we see them best from July through November when they're moving through. What gets anglers hooked? That initial run is absolutely explosive - no warning, just screaming line. The meat is top-shelf too, white and flaky like premium swordfish. They're loners mostly, so each one's a trophy. Here's the key: high-speed trolling with wire leaders is essential because those razor teeth will cut through anything else. We run 12-15 knots with diving plugs and skirted ballyhoo.

Wahoo Fish

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin are the workhorses of the tuna world - pure muscle wrapped in a torpedo body. Most of what we catch runs 40-80 pounds, but the big ones can push 150+. They roam the deep blue water, usually 100-300 feet down, and we target them year-round with peak action in summer and fall. Why do anglers love them? That deep, powerful fight combined with world-class sashimi meat makes every yellowfin special. They're warm-blooded fish that can sustain long battles, so be ready for a workout. We see them around floating debris, temperature breaks, and current edges. Best trick I can share: when trolling isn't working, try chunking with live bait. Cut up some bonita or blue runners and let the scent work its magic - it'll bring them up from the depths.
